We are also offering an off site service which mean our handlers will come to your property and work with your stallion or colt there and can help with training so your stallion can be collected at home if required.

Our custom made facility hosts seperate Stallion paddock with safe post and rail and equifencing, twice daily feed with a mix of Hay and Haylage, Prides feed, quality lucerne and Platinum Motility Plus supplement and we recommend the Colt/Stallion should be on this supplement to optimise their production of good strong healthy sperm motility prior to coming to us for training and collecting/freezing.

We are on site 24/7 and therefore can dispatch almost immediately when semen is required. This takes the stress out of breeding. It reduces the need to have your semen removed from storage before it is required but ensures it will be there when it is needed.

ALL NZ SPORT HORSES IS THE HOME OF

VETS & COSTS

We have all heard horror stories from people about their experience breeding and the costs that can be involved. So our aim is to simplify and clarify the information in the hope that everyone is better informed and prepared. The truth is, breeding can be a heartbreaking game, but it is also hugely rewarding and exciting! If you have managed all that’s in your power to control, your outcome will be favourable without a doubt! So we have price-lists for two of our approved veterinarians, to give you an idea of what costs are reasonable to expect for breeding your mare.

What is reasonable to expect to pay for the services of a specialist equine reproductive veterinarian?

It pays to be aware from the start what the costs are for the veterinary services needed for breeding. All clinics are different, and pricing can be significantly different. Some Clinics will do a package deal for a breeding cycles some of these packages include all the costs while others you will find the pricing does not include the reproductive drugs associated with the breeding and the extras that may be needed. The other points to think about is if your mare needs to be onsite at a clinic for part, or all of the treatment, as this can incur a daily cost which could be as much as $40 per day. It does pay to shop around as there are many adjustment sites close to the vets that can help to keep costs down but still allow for the attention your mare will require while under the vets. Also pays to ask if your Vet is prepared to do after hours or weekend scanning or inseminating. Frozen semen inseminations require attention to detail at insemination time and it is not good for a positive result if the ball is dropped at the crucial time if it happens on the weekend and the vet it not present. Ask for a commitment up front to save disappointment later.

If you are unsure, it always pays to ask for a quote and for all the possible expenses to be included. While it is impossible to know what your mare may need during her cycle you can still ask for a worse case scenario so you are prepared. No one likes hidden costs!

EQUINE SEMEN STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION FACILITY

We are centrally located in the Waikato in Tamahere close to the airport and some of the best Equine reproductive specialists in the country. Our point of difference is we are independent, this leaves you free to choose any Equine reproductive specialist you wish to use. That said we can recommend the best veterinarians if you require and we do offer free transportation to Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre on Pickering Road.

Breeding is already a stressful and expensive enough process without finding you cannot have your semen when you require it! The last thing any breeder needs is to have the expense of preparing a mare for breeding then finding they have to give days sometimes week’s notice to the storage facility to have their OWN semen dispatched. We believe this is unnecessary and adds impossible obstacles in the way of an already time-sensitive process. Everyone suffers but ultimately the breeders come off worst.

HOW IT WORKS

Breeding can be an emotional roller coaster for many people. The highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. It can also be expensive and daunting with sometimes not much information and support for the breeders at grassroots. In the end, there is nothing more exhilarating than watching your healthy foal get to his/her feet/hooves and take its first steps. All the worry and $$$ melt away and it was all so worth it. Fast forward to the foal under saddle winning its first-class and the feeling is unreal!

There is very little in the way of breeder support in NZ so our mission is to provide a place for the much-needed support to grow…

BREEDING ADVICE

Choosing the right stallion for your mare can be a stressful time. There are many factors to consider. Successful breeders study all aspects from pedigree, conformation, strengths and weaknesses and the desired result to make suggestions as to the correct stallion for each mare.  It is always helpful to get some advise from stallion owner and/or more experienced breeders.

The stallion owners have a educated knowledge of the stallions and their traits and what they pass on to their progeny. This knowledge can be very helpful tips to anyone considering breeding. It is important if you are taking advise from a stallion owner to ask many stallion owners so you get an objective response.

We have access to many stallion owners and breeders both here in New Zealand, in Australia and Europe and we are able to collect this information for you and provide a comprehensive report to help you with the decision making.

If you would like to use this service simply fill in the online form and submit. The fee for this service is $29, an invoice will be sent with the report to the email address you supply on our form

There are many aspects to breeding from researching bloodline, understanding stallion contracts, Veterinary costs, obtaining/choosing a mare, judging form and conformation, registration and stud books, DNA testing are just some of the many points to consider when getting into breeding.

It’s fair to say it is not the best idea to get advice about which stallion to use for your mare from a stallion owner…clearly that information will not be an unbiased account of the best possible match for your mare. That said no one knows a stallion better than the Stallion owners his/herself. They will have the best idea of their stallions traits and capabilities and mares they suit the best. So our advice is to get as much advice from as many stallion owners as you can. You will then have a list of the best matches for your mare from all the possibilities.

Stallion contracts are becoming more user friendly. At CryNZ we are interested in working only with stallion owners who have a commitment to our breeders getting a positive result. Not all stallion owners are alike but we believe gone are the days when you paid a several thousand dollar service fee and then played Russian roulette with the straws, often ending up with an enormous vet bill and no pregnancy or foal.

Understanding your stallion contract can be a mind field. Most stallion owners just want to make sure the semen they are selling will produce a pregnancy and will not fall into the hands of an operator with questionable intentions who is trying to abscond with more than one pregnancy after only paying one service fee.

Take for instance ICSI sounds great in theory but essentially it can turn one straw into potentially hundreds of pregnancies. In Europe, there are facilities with specialists Veterinarians performing ICSI on a daily basis.

A stallion owner will advertise a straw from a stallion they have. So you can buy one part of one straw and you are given a date that the ICSI lab is booked for the straw to be thawed and used on the many number of mares booked for the stallion that day. Breeders can book their mare in on that day, then the mare has her eggs flushed and sent to the ISCI lab.

Of course, ICSI is not commonplace here in NZ and is exorbitantly expensive and really only is something to consider if you have a world-class mare whom you wanted to breed to a stallion that was either deceased or has low or no fertility.

Basically any of our stallion owners will work a contract to suit your breeding needs, currently there are some choices.
There is a contract to purchase the straws for a fixed fee. This will be just a simple stock-standard sale of purchase you own the straws and may use them as you wish. These straws can be used for ICSI, you can split the straws up and use them in any dose rate you choose and you can also use them for embryo transfer you pay no more if you manage to get more than one foal but you also have no returns if you do not get any pregnancies.

The most common contract is LFG which stands for Live Foal Guarantee. These means you can return your mare for more semen if the first or second insemination attempt does not result in a pregnancy or if the mare absorbs the pregnancy or the foal does not survive. There may be a condition in this contract which involves your Veterinarian confirming this result.

This season we are delighted to be able to offer this incredible deal from The Stallion Company “PAY AT FOALING” which means the service fee is deferred until the foal is born and healthy.

We also welcome the new stallions from the Holsteiner Verband along with the new pricing system and the possibility for registering your foal directly to the Holsteiner global studbook in Germany. With these stallions, you pay a booking fee which starts at 350 Euro and then pay nothing more until you have a pregnancy. These contracts require an approved Veterinarian to perform the inseminations and report on the result. These processes are in place so there is transparency for all involved and will keep costs for our breeders to a minimum and more consistency of positive results.

These are changing times and we look forward to this breathing life back into our sporthorse industry.
